Product Description : A mountain bike or mountain bicycle abbreviated MTB or ATB all terrain bicycle is a bicycle created and made for off road cycling including jumps and traversing of rocks and washouts and steep declines either on dirt trails logging roads or other unpaved environments Bicycles typically used for mountain biking need to be able to withstand off road use and the surmounting of obstacles such as logs and rocks Most mountain bikes use wheels with rims which are 559 mm in ISO sizing This rim size is colloquially referred to as 26 inch although the term is inaccurate as it describes too many rim and tyre sizes to be meaningful Bicycle wheels used on mountain bikes generally use wide knobby tires for extra traction and shock absorption In the current century front wheel suspension has become the norm and full front and rear suspension has become increasingly common Some mountain bikes are also fitted with bar ends on the handlebars to give extra leverage for hill climbing

Entry level price, great transition into adrenaline sport
Date: 2008-07-25 | Rating: 4
I purchased this bike for two hundred American at a sports specialty retailer, Sports Authority. For the relative low price, I got what I paid for. The bike was heavy at 43 lbs. The dual suspension was a very nice feature during downhill terrains and ramps. The mid section suspension also attempts to be adjustable to accommodate road and rough terrains. I got into a new sport with this bike and was able to learn very fast how equipment can cost more than a motorized version. I took a spill a couple of months back that set my wallet back a few bucks. The rear rim had to be replaced along with two tire tubes, the rear derailleur, cable housing and cable, and a couple months of back recovery (totaling $90). I also purchased a pair of universal debris fenders for muddy downhill rides and rainy cross-country field trips. There are a few upgrades that I would recommend for this product. (1) A Kevlar tube liner to protect the tire tube from being punctured by any thorns or nails ($18). (2) Debris fenders for the front and rear tires if applicable (muddy terrain) ($60). And most important of all, a helmet for off-road and long distance cycling.

About Mongoose In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum Mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a strange and unusual cat-size animal--the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the Mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the Mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame. The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the Mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, Mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of Mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, Mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized Mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs). In 1992, Mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, Mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look. In the next few years, Mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more important, extend beyond it. The Mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. Mongoose's brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. Mongoose was acquired by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes. Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide Finding the Right Bike To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike: The Right Ride In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories: Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain. Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine. Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family. The Right Price A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability. Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use. Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension. High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultralightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action. The Right Size Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips: Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height. Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit. Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance. The Right Accessories When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons: Helmet (this is a must!) Seat pack Lock Hydration pack, or water bottle and bottle cage Spare tubes Portable bike pump Gloves

Bike shouldn't be rated base on shopping experience
Date: 2008-05-22 | Rating: 5
I hate it when people give products a bad rating because the store that they bought the item from sucked. I have the 2007 version of this bike, and I have been riding it 10-15 miles everyday without any problems. It is a bit heavy, but hardly noticeable when riding. It maneuvers very easily, and it goes through the gears very smoothly. The build feels very solid, and I think they are made out of very good parts. I don't take this bike on mountains, and I don't advise you to. This bike is a very good bike for paved roads and trails. If the handlebars are loose...it probably means you didn't tighten it down enough yourself.

Bang For The Buck!!
Date: 2008-05-23 | Rating: 5
Sure this bike probably can't compare to the more expensive bikes you get at the local bike store...HOWEVER, if your main use for this bike is commute, or the only surfaces you bike are on paved bike paths, trails with no more than 1-foot drops, then this bike will do the job to satisfaction. I am only getting into biking after many years of driving cars, so I'm still not 100% sure if I'm going to fall in love with this sport. Once I decide that I am really into this sport, and start going into the woods or mountains where I'll be taking 5-foot drops, I will definitely get a $1000+ bike. But I digress. This bike feels very solid, and so far I have had no mechanical problems whatsoever and I ride it about 45 miles a week on the street and bumpy trails. Luckily, one of my engineering design projects in school have been on human-powered vehicles, giving me a chance to learn about the mechanics of bicycle components; so I am decent at tuning bikes, so that may attribute to why my bikes have had no problems like a loose handle bar. Don't let the snobby mountain bikers, who worships their local bike shops and only buy $2000 bikes, steer you away from buying this bike. Use this bike to decide whether or not you really enjoy this sport, in the end you'll be much happier!

Strong and 35 lbs
Date: 2007-10-16 | Rating: 5
It came partially assembled. I had to put on the front wheel and the handle bar. I needed one box wrench and one allen wrench. The seat has a quick release lever and the pedals just screw on. The tires can handle 60 lbs. I put 55 lbs. in each tire. Be sure to position the tire so that the valve stem is directly under the valve stem opening on the rim before inflation to keep from stressing it. I road on a ruff wilderness trail for three hours without any mechanical problems. It weighs 35 lbs. total.

Good overall Bike
Date: 2008-05-16 | Rating: 5
I decided to review this bike since I saw little to no reviews for it. I got this bike a few days ago, and so far I am very pleased. Easy assembly, due to the fact that it comes partly assembled. If you are not too apt for putting things together, this may be a problem. When I first rode the bike, it was a great ride. For me, it was smooth and easy all the way through. I read somewhere that this bike is heavy, and I will have to admit that it is pretty heavy. It's not something that should stop you from buying it, unless you have a problem lifting it when necessary. I guess the only problems (if you want to call them that) with this bike are the sounds it makes. The suspension makes a creaking sound, doesn't bother me at all. Also, the breaks make a sound when I use them but I am sure I can fix that. So overall, this is a good bike, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested. I do not think you will be disappointed.

This is a nice mountain bike.
Date: 2009-03-29 | Rating: 5
This is the first bike I've purchased since I was a kid. I wanted to get something that wasn't an $80 Kmart bike but I also have no need for a high end bike in the neighborhood of $1000 either. This is well worth $180 in my opinion. First of all, I received the bike very quickly. There was no cosmetic damage to the bike whatsoever and I was able to put it together in less than a half hour with very limited knowledge of bikes. The bike comes partially pre-assembled, you will just have to attach the front wheel, handlebars and peddles and make small adjustments to the brakes. You should only need a couple of allen wrenches and crescent wrench to put the bike together. One piece of advice, just make sure the handlebars are on as tight as possible, they got a little loose on my first ride because I didn't tighten them down enough. I have only taken it on paved roads so far but it rides very smooth. So far I have done 2 10-mile bike rides and have seen nothing to complain about with the bike. I would highly recommend this bike to anyone who is looking for a good entry level bike at a good price.

AWESOME - Schwinn Protocol 2.0
Date: 2009-04-01 | Rating: 5
This bike is awesome. Pretty easy to assemble if you're somewhat of a hands-on person. Very comfortable, sleek design and very affordable discounted price through amazon dealers. I saved about $100.00 off retail.

Great looking Schwinn, can't beat the price!
Date: 2009-10-23 | Rating: 4
I simply bought this bike to get off the couch. My son has an expensive mountain bike, but I didn't want to pay as much as he did. I've used Schwinn products in the past and felt comfortable. Altho Schwinn is made in china its still a great looking bike. I replaced the seat and am looking to change the handle bars as well for my comfort. I recomend this bike, I went for price per pound no tax and free shipping and am well satisfied.

Great looking bike. Decent componants for the price.
Date: 2008-12-27 | Rating: 3
To start out, I got the bike on Christmas day. I set it up, (put together patially wrong) Took the kids ot for a ride and noticed that the chain kept popping when I peddled somewhat aggesively. Almost had a good crash due to this popping of the chain. Got almost home and noticed about 12 different teeth on the sprockets had broken off! 2 hours in! So far the rest seems pretty nice though. I found out that they use old Shimano toolings from the 70s. It is made by a Chinese company (Very poorly) I am no bike mechanic, and im a big guy (225 lbs) May be a good call for a lighter rider.

Nice bike poor freewheel
Date: 2009-01-10 | Rating: 3
This is nice bike, with a poor freewheel, after a week using this bike the freewheel lose a lot of teeth, and there are no other good, like shimano, freewheel 8 speed components, only for 7 speed in screw on. This bike is perfect if you take this part off.

Minor assembly is required before the bike can be used.

Customer Reviews

Perfectly adequate given the price.
Date: 2007-07-11 | Rating: 5
I am amazed at the reviews given, not for just this bike, but for any cheap item on Amazon or elsewhere. What exactly do people expect when they are paying so little money? I just received this bike today and I'm quite satisfied with this purchase, given that I only paid less than one hundred dollars for this bike during a recent Gold Box deal. In reading many reviews of bikes purchased through Amazon, I was quite apprehensive of the assembly needed once I received delivery of the bike. But it turned out that indeed most of the bike was already pre-assembled. I'd say probably over 80% of the bike is already assembled. You only need to place the front tire on and then tighten the front handle bars. Lastly, attach on the foot pedals and that's about it. It took us about 40 minutes to install and I'm by no means adept with assembling bikes. Are their bikes out there which are better than this one? Of course. Can Mongoose improve on this bike? Absolutely. Can you use this for serious or professional outdoor mountain biking? Probably not. Do I plan to do that? No. If I did, I'd cough up $1000 and purchase a more serious bike to do that. Do I think this bike is worth the one hundred dollars I paid for it? ABSOLUTELY! Would I purchase it again for one hundred dollars? ABSOLUTELY. For the money, I think it's a great recreational bike. I will use this bike probably 5 times a week for about an hour or two at most riding around the neighborhood and nearby bike trails. So for me, it's more than adequate. I don't need anything more expensive currently. All in all, I'm quite satisfied with the bike for the money. I wholeheartedly give it 5 stars given the price I paid--less than one hundred dollars. I do have one concern with this bike. I haven't been able to raise the front handle bars to a higher level. I have to lean/hunch down too far to ride it as of now. I need to get this fixed and it should be a very nice ride given the amount I paid. This has more to do with me figuring out how to raise the handle bar than the design of the bike. I'm certain it's possible to raise the handle bar, but I haven't figured it out just yet.

Nice bike. ..................

hi, i just assembled my bike. Took about 2 hours to get it perfect (this include time to figure out.) But if you know what you are doing, it takes less than 30 min. I included my little instruction for those who might need it. To set it up, you don't really need a manual because it is not so specific for this bike. You gonna need lots of difference sizes of L-keys and some small wrenches to tightend the screws. The bike comes mostly assembled, though. Major parts to make sure are the brakes. You need to unscrew/screw and adjust those. Remember, everything can be taken apart. So, don't afraid to take those apart. For the handle bar, all you need to do is take out the black rubber protective cover, and slide it in the tube of the bike. Then, using L-key, just tighten it. For the seat, you don't need any tools. Just slide it in and press the lever. For the front wheel, take off the protective black rubber bar. Then unscrew the cables holding the brakes so that you can put in the wheel. After the wheel is in, you can put the brakes back. Make sure the brakes are on the rim and not on the tire. (everyone probably know this!) I am only 5 foot 7 inches tall, so the bike is a little big for me. With the lowest seat settings, my inseam is less than 1 inch away from the bar. But it's alright. Once i start riding, it doesn't make any differencce. I get used to it now and I can handle perfectly fine. As always, Amazon shipping was super quick. No scratches or defects except a tiny dent in the handle bar.

Perfect for the price!

considering that my next-door bike shop was selling something similiar for over 350$, I suppose this a great bargain. If you're not a pro I think you'll like the bike as well since it does exactly what it's supposed to. Assemblying was super easy and I was using the bike just 1/2 hour after receiving, even if instructions are not provided. Anyway remember this is a cheap bike so you might consider having it checked at your local bike shop to get brakes and gears tuned up -it usually takes 1 hour of labor-.

Hard to imagine that this is less than $200.

When I was a kid I was extremely angry at my father because he would not buy me a Mongoose dirt bike. I guess I still have a bit of a grudge because 20 years later I decided to finally get my Mongoose. :) While this isn't a bike that I would choose to scale Denali in (Let's be serious. I am not going to scale Denali on any bike), it is a tremendous bike for the price. It came double boxed and was in great shape. I only had to do a few simple steps and I was riding. I did have to adjust the brakes and gears a bit, but I don't know much about bikes and it was really easy. The bottom line is that this bike is easy to ride, looks cool, and doesn't cost much.

best bike for the price
Date: 2007-02-12 | Rating: 5
This is the best bike I found in the low end price range. I would suggest to anyone who purchases this bike to take it to a bicycle shop and have it professionally fine tuned and have them finish the assembly for you. It really made a difference and for safety it is the best way to be sure the bike is operating at its best. The man at the bicycle repair shop I took the bike to agreed this is the best bike you can buy for the price. I purchased this bike for my fourteen year old and he is very happy with it.

great entry level bike
Date: 2008-06-08 | Rating: 5
Got this bike primarily for my commute to work. Yes, even though a mountain bike isn't the most efficient bike for the roads, I wanted something that I could get a little rough with. So far I'm not disappointed at all. The gears did need a little tweaking but after that it's been smooth sailing. The Shimano derailleurs are nice, the dual suspension is terrific (my first bike with any suspension). With probably a few upgrades to components this could be a hardcore bike. For this price it definately competes with $1000 bikes.

Minimal assembly required

I am pleased with this product. It is not a high end Mountain bicycle but as an intermediate model it fits the needs of a casual rider. I found the seat too narrow and order a wider one. Parts can fall off the shifter levers if not used correctly.

Not pretty,but pretty nice!

Not that looks are important in a bike that has comfort and plenty of quality features, but hmmm yellow? rides nice and smooth,i like the gear controls, they switch easy and overall bike is well made, great price!

Great bike for the neighborhood and park
Date: 2009-05-21 | Rating: 4
My husband bought this bike for me for mother's day and I love it. I like the wide wheels and the ease of use. I can keep up with my kids in the park and in the neighborhood and the gear shifts are easy to use. It also doesn't hurt my back like other bikes where you have to hunch over more. The seat can use a little more cushioning, but otherwise it is a great bike.

16 miles a day for the last two weeks and she runs just fine. Diamondback knows how to make a good bike. I am still trying to figure out what the two extra parts are for. I wonder who I ask?

Thank you.
